Things to Consider
Framing can seem like a daunting task but here are some basic steps to keep in mind as you think about how to frame your piece.
Moulding
Where will the art go? What’s the decor like? Is this a short term or long term placement? If it’s a short term placement, then you may consider matching the frame to the art and less the decor so that when you do move the piece can stand on its own.
What kind of feel are you going for?

Mounting
The most standard way to mount a piece is to drymount, which is a permanent process where the art is glued to a foam core board to remove creases and wrinkles. For most photos and posters this is a great way to mount the piece. However, it is irreversible and we do not recommend it for any pieces of value.
For pieces of value, we recommend conservation mounting. The most common practice here is to use acid free backing and acid free hinging tape to hang your piece from the backing board. This process is reversible but will show the natural waves of the paper.
For specialty pieces, such as jerseys or artifacts, we will work with you to determine the best way to hang the pieces whether it’s hand sewing the pieces or creating shadowboxes.
Canvas Stretching & Wrapping
We can also stretch any size canvases so that they can be fitted into frames and the image can be floated over the stretcher of the canvas (wrapping).
Mat Boards
Matting a piece of art provides three benefits:
- It ensures the artwork does not touch the glass as the mat board acts as a spacer. This is important since fluctuations in condensation may make the artwork stick to the glass causing damage.
- Matting gives a piece its own unique space and presence on the wall and elevates a snapshot or poster into art on the wall.
- Conservation increases the life and enjoyment of your artwork.
Glazing
Glazing protects the artwork from airborne acidic particles, slows humidity transfer, prevents the occasional touching or brushing of the art surface and most importantly, it can protect against light damage. Bright light and direct sunlight are among the most damaging agents to artwork.
Depending on your piece and how much sun your room gets, there are many types of glazing. Come in and we’ll help you pick the right one.
